History

Saint Thomas Aquinas Choir was formed in 1974, with the help of the Junior Legion to serve the 7:30am mass. It was originally known in the parish as the 7:30am choir until it was given its present name in 1978.

In the early beginnings of the choir’s formation, we faced many challenges such as small membership, limited support as well as finding an identity and our place within the community. However, despite these challenges, the choir rose to the occasion to stage a performance during Christmas at the Nativity Church Centre in 1979, which gave us the recognition and support we needed from the community.

In 2002, with much help from the choir of the Church of St. Mary’s of the Angels, we made the transition to a four-part SATB choir. That same year, Nativity Church had its very first Advent and Christmas Celebration sung in parts, supported by a combined choir from all the different masses. It was a great success, and people loved the new choral sound. From then on, the combined choir has continually upheld the tradition of performing multi-part choral pieces for the Lent and Advent celebrations.

Encouraged by the positive response, and eager to learn more, choir members attended choral and liturgical workshops organised by well-known conductors and members of the liturgical music committee. This exposure has also helped us make new friends from other church choirs with similar directions, and the new experiences have widened the choir’s horizons considerably.

Today, the choir continues to serve the 7:30am mass every Sunday. We count our blessings for the choir members, conductors and organists who tirelessly serve the church every week and liturgical celebrations such as the Lenten and Advent seasons. Currently, the choir has about 30 members, 2 conductors and 3 organists.
